Hidden Art Milan 2010... the fab 5

Milan 2010 was a great show and experience, apologies for the delay in posting updates. Below is a quick bio about each designer and the work they exhibited:

Here the designers and Hidden Art team.

Rupert Goldberg and his Bounce chaise longue and Egg revolving chair. Each wooden block is individually cut and hand finished in Ruperts East London workshop; before being meticulously assembled into various products. The visitors to the stand couldn't get enough of the egg, with many getting a spin.
Detail: inside the egg!

Patternity: Grace Winteringham (half of Patternity) with her Phase Bureau, made by experienced furniture maker Toby Winteringham. The Phase pattern used in the range explores traditional marquetry craft revisited – true to the technique, the design represents the transitions between cutting out & replacing in, combining old with new, bold with neutral.
I think it was really refreshing to see a traditional technique using contemporary pattern and colour. Check out their website which is constantly updated with a visual feast of patterns they've sourced from the internet, photography and their own work.
Detail: Phase pattern on central leaf.

RALLI Design:Louis Howe and Sophie Howe with their Flip Chair and Stepping Stool. They were recently featured in Homes and Property, which was much deserved after they demonstrated their products tirelessly through out the week of the show; (they must have tallied up hundreds of demos) .

Video: Louis demonstrating the multi purpose use of the Flip chair-demo number 900....! Apologies for the sideways viewing.

Purewhyte: Me standing rather nonchalantly by the Tuffet Stool, which was comprised of 3 stacking stools and a table. For impromptu socializing that can then be tidied away and used as a side table. They are a prototype made from compressed sawdust and resin, using this material a hollow shape can be cast and then be worked like timber.
Detail: The Array bowls, with fruit in before it was stolen by passers by (I know show food is expensive but really, fruit!!)

Dare Studio: Sean Dare exhibited the Katakana Desk and Chair, Cage Light, and Fujiya Lamps.
The company, founded by Sean Dare, champions the skills of local craftsmen and sets a benchmark for the very best in contemporary British design and manufacture.
Detail: The Katakana desk and chair in American black walnut and Buttercup yellow leather. Which was snapped up straight away by another exhibitor who loved it so much they couldn't stop stroking the desk!

Milan was a great experience, and the Satellite had a huge selection of young designers work, I'll be posting more photos from the show soon.

BACK FROM MILAN

...AND THANK YOU!

It has been a busy two weeks, with the Milan Furniture Fair and then trying to get back to the UK afterwards; thank you Eyjafjallajokull!

I'll be updating this blog soon with highlights and features from the fair, but for now:

Sunday, 11 April 2010

Ciao Milano!

Purewhyte would like to invite you to the Milan Furniture Fair from the 14th to 19th of April.
Purewhyte will be launching three new products alongside four UK based independent manufacturers. As part of the Hidden Art stand, within the SaloneSatellite,
PAVILIONS 22-24 , STAND D2.

This event is supported by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI).

The Milan 2010 possie are (from left to right) Kirsty Whyte of Purewhyte :) Sean Dare of Dare Studio, Louis and Sophie Howe of RALLI Design, Grace Winteringham of Patternity and Rupert Goldberg of Rupert Goldberg Ltd.

The Purewhyte products being launched at Milan this year are:

The Drew Occasional Tables.
These new tables are an extension of the Drew range Launched in Spring 2009. They use same handwriting and manufacture process; made from one continuous piece of steel rod. Meaning minimal material is wasted in production. The forms have been pared down, making an even purer form. They are smaller, lighter so it can sit with any contemporary environment.
Steel Rod base and Tempered Glass top.
Available in White, grey and graphite black.
Ready for Production.
Dims:   TALL – H762 x W385 x D385
            LOW – H412 x W495 X D495

Tuffet Stacking stool and table set.
The very first prototype to be launched at Milan 2010. The stools are made from sawdust and resin, from a process in its infancy developed by Turners and Moore and Purewhyte. The Sawdust and resin mix is molded under high pressure and heat. The resulting material can then be worked and finished like timber. This process uses a material that would usually be thrown away; using a mould also means a larger shape can be made with less wastage in comparison to solid timber.
The complete set of three stools and a small table can be stacked away and also used as a side table.
Prototype.
Dims:   Stacked set- H837 x Dia 469
            East stool – H356

Array Bowls.
Each bowl is made from one single piece of folded sheet steel. So there is very little waste from production. The Spring/Summer colours of Aqua, Mushroom and Magenta add a refreshing punch of colour to any table top.
Dims:   Large – H64 x Dia 284
            Small – H51 x Dia 227

So if you are visiting the Milan Furniture Fair this year pop in to see us and the new products.

MILAN 2010

Next show in the Purewhyte Calendar – The Milan Furniture Fair 2010.

I can’t believe only a year has passed since Purewhyte first exhibited at a design fair, back in April 2009 showing with Designersblock during the Milan furniture Fair.

Milan is just around the corner again and (7 shows later) Purewhyte will be exhibiting once more.

This year with Hidden Art at SaloneSatellite (within the Fiera Milano; behind pavillion 22-24 - in same complex as Salone Internazionale del Mobile) which is the premier location for visitors during the fair. I have been one of five independent UK designers selected to have the opportunity to launch new products and prototypes.

The exhibitors consist of: Dare Studio, Patternity, RALLI Design, Rupert Goldberg and Purewhyte.

From 14th to 19th April 2010

We will be on STAND D2.

Purewhyte will be exhibiting three new products:

DREW Occasional and Coffee table

This is a brand new addition to the range; due to be launched at the Milan Furniture Fair 2010, with Hidden Art. The same handwriting has been used as with the rest of the Drew range, but has been pared down, making an even purer form. It is smaller, lighter so it can sit with any contemporary environment.

Currently ranged in white, black and grey.

Manufactured in the UK by AWBL.

TUFFET Stacking Stool and table

The very first prototype to be launched at Milan 2010. The stools are made from sawdust and resin, from a process in its infancy developed by Turners and Moore and Purewhyte, initially for the Connect candle holder shown at Birmingham interiors this year. The Sawdust and resin mix is moulded under high pressure and heat. The resulting material can then be worked and finished like timber. This process uses a material that would usually be thrown away; using a mould also means a larger shape can be made with less wastage.

The finish can be in bare timber sawdust and resin, pigmented resin and a water based lacquer.

The complete set of three stools and a small table can be stacked away and also used as a side table.

Prototype manufactured by Turners and Moore, and looking for licensing agreements in Milan.

ARRAY bowls

As with most Purewhyte designs the Array bowl is made from one piece of material; here powder coated sheet steel, meaning little to no waste.

This purely designed bowl adds an accent of fun and colour.

6th Annual Hidden Art Awards!

I'VE WON AN AWARD!
This year I was one of the Lucky Designers short-listed for one of the Hidden Art Awards 2010; Most Active Member.

The awards were held at Rich Mix London's up-and-coming cross-arts centre located in the vibrant area of Shoreditch/East London. Above are the Attendees.

AND I WON! Most Active member; such a fantastic surprise; but this blog will certainly support what a busy 2009 Purewhyte has had.
I was presented the award by Colin Wilary-Attew the Events and Membership Manager at Hidden Art.

Here's me looking pretty ecstatic with my award and Champers.

Thankfully I didn't do an Amy Winehouse and leave the award somewhere, here it is close up and safe at home!

Thankyou so much to Hidden Art for nominating me for this award and all the help and support I have received from the team over the last 12 months.

Although I think 2010 has started out even busier!
